Episode 50: A Chat with Joyce Valenza Regarding Transparency
July 08, 2008 11:40 AM PDT

Joyce Valenza is wonderfully articulate, especially on a spur of the moment, poorly edited (that's my fault), podcast. I LOVE what she has to say initially about transparency and how her words will reflect who she is. She also touches on important topics like branding teacher-librarians (or something like that).

Episode 49- Blogging in Higher Education
July 04, 2008 08:07 PM PDT
itunes pic

Dr. Maria Kaylor (University of Texas at San Antonio), Dr. Cheri Toledo (Illinois State University), Nicolas Toledo and I had a chance to discuss blogging in higher education at NECC 2008. It was very much an impromptu conversation as Dr. Kaylor and I ran into each other cruising the poster sessions, and she shared her first venture into blogging with students in a course scheduled for Fall, 2008. I am particularly proud of Dr. Kaylor since I'd like to think that I introduced her to blogging!

I thought Dr. Kaylor's comments provided insights into how higher education professionals who haven't used blogs are conceptualizing their use in their work. What was really neat was having Dr. Cheri Toledo just walk up and say hello, creating the opportunity for a conversation among higher ed professionals about blogging.

This conversation was fascinating, so I encourage you to listen to these three wonderful folks share their perspectives on blogging in higher ed!

Una entrevista con los fundadores de Elconix.com, una empresa en Panama sobre su negocio.

More available online at http://mguhlin.net

I recently had the opportunity to interview Moises Vega, Jr., one of the founders of Elconix.com, a business focused on developing using PHP/MySQL, as well as other free, open source tools, to develop solutions for businesses in Panama and abroad. Today, I chatted with Moises Vega and Jose Vega--brothers and co-founders--regarding their use of open source.

Although we began in English, I decided to switch to Spanish. I'm pleased that both of them felt more comfortable in sharing some of the issues they encountered as family members starting a business.

In the interests of full disclosure, please note that I am related to Moises and Jose, which is what made me aware and granted me access to the interview, however, I do not benefit financially in any way from interviewing them, nor do I have any financial interests with them. In other words, I'm just doing the interview because I find what they do interesting...it's great that they happen to be related!

Leaving School for the Real World
July 08, 2007 07:55 PM PDT
itunes pic

In most of my presentations this year, I invariably highlight the point that schools are increasingly irrelevant to our youth. The power of the Internet to provide free/libre, open source software tools, accessibility of customers (a la Long Tail), the power of Google to find what you need to learn when you need to learn it, a vision of what could be, and a surrender to the passions of the heart...well, these very well describe what it may be that pushes young folks to walk out universities and schools, and go into business for themselves.
Moises Vega is one of the examples I use to highlight this point. Moises is co-founder (his wife is the other) of a Call Records Management business--known as ELCONIX--in Panama. (Full Disclosure: Moises is my 27 year old nephew). His product has grown so popular that he now markets it abroad, including the United States...he dropped out of his university studies because he didn't want to wait five years to get started.
This is the first of two podcasts. I urge you to listen to him share his point of view about how he got started and the conviction he has. He makes points that merit our attention and interest as educators.

Entrevista con Estella

One of the short, interesting interviews is with Estella, a licensed social worker. She took time after recording a radio program at Radio Veraguas to share her perspective--in Spanish--on domestic violence. I'm not quite sure she understood what a podcast was but she did agree to have this posted on the Internet here. The conversation is farily short and to the point.

Interview with Miguel on Panamanian Radio Station

Today, I visited Radio Veraguas in Santiago, Panama. After I interviewed the folks who ran the radio station, I should have known that radio folks would interview me LIVE on the radio! It was fascinating to watch them move the sliders up and down on the mixer to amplify their voices, especially when mentioning someone's name. Anyways, here is my clumsy recording of the interview the gentlemen below did of me and that ended up LIVE on the radio in Santiago de Veraguas in the Republic of Panama, July 5, 2007!

Here's a photo of Ray, who interviewed me.

Restoring Panama's Teacher College

Earlier today, I had the chance to visit the teachers' college from which my mother, a native "Santiaguena" from Panama, graduated from in 1948. It is awesome to walk into an old building that has played such a key role in the lives of so many people in the Republic of Panama. It is ever more astonishing to realize that it is because of these efforts that many Panamanians have managed to advance.

The school is being reconstructed, careful attention being given to the idea that the school's original look-n-feel be kept. To get the job done right, Juan Fierro and his firm were called in

Interview with John Livingston, CEO of Absolute Software
Clean
April 10, 2007 03:57 PM PDT

A few short months ago, I challenged the idea that Absolute Software's CompuTrace product was a laptop theft-deterrant. Since I had access to a computer loaded with CompuTrace, I found that if I reformatted the computer, loaded GNU/Linux on it, the computer would not check in. This effectively bypassed the protection CompuTrace provided.
When I shared my findings with others via my blog, I immediately received emails testifying to how wonderful CompuTrace was. However, the criticisms didn't nullify the fact that if a thief steals a laptop with CompuTrace on it, loads Linux instead of Windows or Macintosh, that laptop will not check in.
As I was reviewing the emails and resulting conversations on my blog, I received an email from John Livingston, CEO of Absolute Software. He was kind enough to agree to an interview for podcasting purposes.
This podcast would have been completed earlier, but I was a bit busy getting ready to go to New Zealand and a few million other projects. We finally had a chance to have a chat over the phone on Monday, April 9th. It was a fun conversation, mainly because John gave us his perspective on CompuTrace. He also invites feedback via the Absolute Software Blog.
